My Speech

As you all already know, in class we have been doing our own "I Have A Dream" speeches. Over the last week we have read Martin Luther King Jr.'s actual speech. We watched the video of his speech. We wrote an opening and presented it in class. We wrote a closing and presented it in class. We wrote the rest of our speech. And today we presented them to Ms. Ferreira in class. I heard that all of the speeches went great and although I did not get to present mine yet, because I was with the band at the elementary school, I can't wait to read them all and I cant wait to share mine with you. Anyway here it is I hope you all like it.

How many kids do you know with either a mental  or physical disability? It isn’t ok the way they are treated just because they are a little bit different. It is not fair that all of those harsh words are forced upon them because of something they can’t even control. Similar to what Martin Luther King Jr. said, “One day...little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers,” (King 3). In the same way, I have a dream that one day disabled children will be treated as equals among all other children.

Children with disabilities such as autism, dyslexia, and others have a hard time learning in school, and being social with their friends. Some schools have special programs to help those kids that do not function like the rest of the kids, but there are a lot of schools and teachers that lack the ability to really understand what that child is going through. The teachers try to help the kids but it is hard for them. Kids with disabilities often act different to the rest of the kids, and others just think that they are weird or strange and don’t bother to try to figure out why they act the way that they do. Some teachers will notice that other kids are bothered by what a disabled child does. They don’t normally know what to do in this situation to help the disabled child, so they often send them out of the classroom to talk to a guidance counselor or a paraprofessional. This might seem like the best choice to help the class stay on track, but think about how the disabled child feels. These children often feel as if the teacher doesn’t like them and thinks that the teacher doesn’t want them in their class. And in reality the guidance counselor or paraprofessional the teacher send the child to doesn’t know how to handle them any differently than the teacher would. My brother has a form of autism so I have experienced all of this second hand. I remember when my brother went to Tyngsborough Elementary School, he was often made fun of by the rest of the kids in his grade. He would hear someone say something that made him mad and when the teacher saw his reaction she automatically blamed him for just about everything, even if he didn’t do anything wrong. He would talk to the guidance counselor who was a lot of help at first, but once he got back to the classroom his day would just take a drastic turn for the worst. He would come home from school everyday and tell our parents about how terribly he was treated. He explained it as though he was trying to make things right but because of every little thing he did someone tried to make fun of him. He has been treated this way just because he acts a little bit differently than everyone else.

When the founding fathers of our country wrote in the Declaration of Independence that all men would be created equal they surely did not mean for children with disabilities to be treated as if they were from another planet. They did not want these kids to feel pushed away from having friends and feeling included. This is not a country that should be judging someone on how they act, or even because they don’t understand how to interact with other people. How can we stand back and watch children who don’t know what they are doing wrong get punished for what they think is right?

Speech is a power, a power to convince, a power to persuade, and most of all a power to show how you feel

Bowdoin Open Swim Meet Results

Over the weekend I went to Maine to swim in a 5 session open swim meet at Bowdoin College. Here I swam 7 events as well as 3 relays. Overall it was a very long weekend, and my whole team is now very tired. In the first session on Friday night I swam the 500 free and the 800 free relay. My seed time going into the 500 was a 5:59.83 but during the event I dropped 9.02 seconds getting a time of 5:50.81. In the relay my team got a time of 8:57.21. In my team was Jaylan, Julia, Magan, and me. My leg of the relay was a 2:11.54 which is .70 seconds faster than my best 200 free time. At the Saturday morning session I swam the 200 free, the 100 back, and the 50 free. In the 200 free I dropped 2.03 seconds from my time in the relay the night before getting me a time of 2:09.51. In the 100 back I got a time of 1:08.78 dropping 1.72 seconds from my previous best of 1:10.50. In the 50 free, which is my favorite event as well as the hardest to drop time in, I beat my previous best time of 27.25 by .70 getting me a time of 26.55, securing me 41st place out of 183 people between the ages of 13 and 18. The next session on Saturday Night I swam the 400 Medley relay. I swam the 100 back and got a time of 1:09.28 which was not as fast as I swam that morning but still faster than my best time before this swim meet. In the Sunday morning session I swam the 100 free, the 100 breast, and the 200 IM. In the 100 free, I beat my previous best time of 1:00.82 by 3.03 seconds, finally breaking 1:00, with a time of 57.79. In the 100 breast I got a time of 1:18.26 which was a 3.17 second drop from my previous best time of 1:21.43. In the 200 IM I beat my previous best time of 2:34.34 by 8.79 seconds with a time of 2:25.55. IN the last session, the Sunday night session, I swam the 400 Free relay. My team got a time of 3:54.62. I got a split of 57.87, which was not as good as that morning but after a long weekend with a lot of swims I did pretty well. Overall my team placed 5th with 1692 points out of 23 teams. The boys placed 2nd overall receiving a trophy for their achievement. Many people on out team did very well. Meghan placed 8th overall in the 100 free with a time of 55.07 seconds which was .24 seconds slower than her 54.83 during prelims. Also, the New Wave girls A relay for the 400 free relay placed 11th qualifying for sectionals in Buffalo this spring with a time of 3:49.78. The team did a fabulous job at Bowdoin this weekend and we all had a lot of fun. We can't wait to go back next year when we will be faster and place even higher in all of our events.

Set you goals high, but keep going until you shoot well past what was expected

Bowdoin Open Swim Meet

I am so sad I wasn't able to be in school today. I have to go to Maine this weekend to compete in the Bowdoin Open Swimming Championships. I am so excited to swim. My team and I have been looking forward to this meet for so long now and we can't wait to get in  the water and swim. I am doing lots of events but today I am just doing the 500 free and probably a couple of relays. I can't wait to get there I am so excited. If you want to see what the whole team is swimming this weekend check out the final entry. Once you are here you will need to click on the final entry document. Can't wait to come back to school and tell you all about my meet. I will try to post more about how I do but we will see if I can even get internet. I am so excited.

If you don't have confidence in your race, you will find a way to lose

The Amputee QB

How far do you think you could go after getting your leg amputated? Jacob Rainey, from Woodberry Forest High School is determined to show the would that with an amputated leg you can go just as far as anyone. Jacob Rainey got in a terrible football accident when he was only 17 years old. A tackler dove into him and grabbed his legs. Jacob Rainey tried to get free of the tackler but in the process he dislocated his leg at the knee. While trying to escape the tackler's hold an artery popped cutting off the circulation to his lower leg. Rainey explained it as a pop and all of a sudden he was on the ground. This type of injury can be fatal. Tissue dies very quickly when no blood is reaching it and if to much tissue dies you can get killed by the injury. Rainey was rushed to the hospital where doctors worked on his leg but no matter what they did the only solution to his problem was to amputate his leg just above the knee. Rainey received a fake leg to help him walk. His physical therapist told him to use his competitive energy to get to the Paralympics because he was never going to be able to play football again. Rainey wasn't ready to give up playing football and when his therapist said he wouldn't he became even more determined to play again. Later that year when Rainey was about to play in the first game of the year as a starter on the high school team "it felt like the whole country was there - most of them to see if Rainey might do the seemingly impossible and play," (O'Brien 13). Rainey did play in the first game. He only played 5 plays but he was just happy to be back on the field and compete again. I would never be able to imagine how he felt being told he would never play again. My friend on my swim team recently had to have knee surgery and she couldn't swim for just a couple of months. She cried when she told us that she wouldn't be swimming and we all felt terrible. We came together and bought her a 4 foot tall teddy bear. This was just a couple of months. I felt so bad for her and I thought well it could be a lot worse if she could never swim again. I could not imagine what I would do if I couldn't swim. Swimming is my life as I would guess football is his. I would not give up swimming if something like this happened to me. I would realize that I couldn't do everything I had been planning to do with my swimming career but I would try and try, and work and work, until I got to the Paralympics for swimming and made my country proud in what I do. How would you handle this type of injury? Would you ever be able to recover from such an injury? Would you react the same way as 17 year old Jacob Rainey?

Even if you fall on your face you are still moving forward

My Free Write (I Hope You All Love It)

Sorry this was a little late, I did the free write but I didn't know if we had to post it or not so I am posting it now.

I did the prompt...
If you could give any gift in the world, what would you give and to whom?

In her sleep she dreamt of a horse. A long light brown speckled horse. One that swept her across the yard in a matter of seconds.  With the wind blowing her hair back out of her face. It was all so real, but when she woke up she was disappointed once again. She went down stairs to eat breakfast completely forgetting what day it was. She turned into the kitchen and was surprised to see her mom and dad standing there with her favorite breakfast. This was when she remembered, this was the one day a year she didn't have to do anything. She didn't have to collect her chicken's eggs or feed her dog, she just got to relax because today was her sixteenth birthday. All day she dreamed thinking maybe this was her year, maybe she would finally get a horse. The whole day she waited and the whole day people showered her with jewelry and other gifts, but all the while I stayed away knowing my chance was coming. I couldn't wait any longer, it was almost the end of the day, almost time for me to drive her home and give her the gift of a lifetime. Just 5 minutes... 2 minutes... 30 seconds... 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, BRINNNG! Finally school was dismissed. I quickly went to my locker and grabbed my stuff, I was out of there in less than 30 seconds. I was putting my stuff in the car when Caitlin showed up. We both got in and started driving home. We were over the bridge when I turned right. Caitlin looked confused and asked where we were going. All I said was I have a surprise for you. She looked surprised seeing as I had ignored her all day. We got to my house and I told her to get out and close her eyes. I went around to the back of my house and grabbed the horse, the exact one she was seeing in her dreams. I brought it over and told her to look. When she looked around her eyes widened in surprise, she ran over to me and hugged me and started crying. The horse came over as if it knew she was happy as if it knew she was his owner. I knew at that moment I had made a difference in her life. In fact today in the year 2025 she owns her own stable called Pine Cone Creek Stables where she still rides that same  horse which she named after me. And I visit every month and she is always so happy now that her dream of owning a stable has come true.

Thanks for reading it. I can't wait to read everybody else's posts. I know they will be great.
